Movie Inventions That Would Be Great In Real Life

When Nike recently announced that they were making shoes styled on the self-lacing shoes in Back To The Future 2, I don't think words can describe the excitement I felt. Along with a hoverboard, self-drying clothes, Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor, and being able to ‘hydrate’ meals in 5 seconds… Back to the Future really has some cool gadgets I’d like to get my hands on. Here are some more things I wish companies would hurry up and make (including some that seem to be just on the horizon!):

• Droids that can talk to/reprogram computers, crack hilarious jokes, and probably project your favourite films with their hologram function. And can occasionally fly…?! Or maybe we shouldn’t mention that… However, they have already made an R2D2 projector, so I guess that's progress...

• Willy Wonka's lickable wallpaper

• Back to the Future and Wallace and Gromit both have some pretty cool mechanisms that sort out the early morning routine for them. I thought that the lego contraption for the mouse in The Witches was my favourite though. People need some cool gadgetry for the mornings!

• Inspector Gadget’s car. Mainly for the Skittles dispenser.

• I don't like guns, but if I did, I reckon weaponry should definitely be more like in Desperado, with the guitar case machine guns. On the subject of cool guns, Planet Terror's machine gun leg should also get a mention.

• Waste Allocation Load Lifter - aka essentially a trash compactor, aka Wall-E. If he can’t sort out my mess of a room, no one can.

• Travel via the sub-space highway, as in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Travelling via the dream world would make getting to work so much easier.

• Of course I could say that I wanted a TARDIS, or a sonic screwdriver, but that’d just be greedy. I’d settle for having the Universal Translator that the TARDIS field creates, much like the tiny fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. That being said, the new app from Vocre is supposed to do just this - if you speak into your iPhone, it’ll come out the other end in whatever language you choose, and the speech from the other side will get translated back into your language on your side. Amazing. Now we just need something that isn’t biased towards people with smartphones. And comes with a Doctor.
